Applying for Resident Permit (RP) and Physical Examination

i. Applying for RP

In accordance with the Implementation Rules of the Law Of the People's Republic of China on Control Of the Entry and Exit Of Aliens, foreign resident journalists in Shanghai, their spouses and children holding "J-1" visa should apply for RPs at the Exit-Entry Administration of Shanghai Municipal Bureau of Public Security within 30 days of entry. The validity period of RP is no longer than one year and shall not exceed the expiration date of passport.

The following documents are required for RP application:

1. Passport with valid visa,

2. Residence Registration Certificate in Shanghai,

3. Filled-out Foreigner's Visa and Resident Permit Application Form with the seal of the employer and a recent passport size photo, showing full-face with no hat and taken against a light blue background,

4. Press Card (R) issued by the Information Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs,

5. Health Certificate issued by the Inspection & Quarantine Agency (for those first-time RP applicants who are 18 years old or over),

6. RP or the Press Card (R) of the journalist and official letter from the Shanghai-based media organization for his/her accompanying spouse and children,

7. Marriage certificate for accompanying spouse,

8. Kinship certificate for accompanying children,

9. Official letter issued by Shanghai FAO.

Foreign journalists are requested to go to the Exit-Entry Administration to extend the RP before it expires.

ii. Physical Examination and Health Certificate

Shanghai-based resident foreign journalists, their spouses and children, upon arrival in China, should take physical examinations at the local inspection and quarantine administration so as to get the Health Certificate (those under 16 years old are exempted from physical examination). The Health Certificate is valid for six months from the date of issuing.

No food intake before physical examination. Do not forget to bring your passport, its copy and four passport size photos.
