Mayor Han Zheng Meets Cuban Ambassador Alberto Blanco Silva

On March 27, Mayor Han Zheng met with H.E. Alberto Blanco Silva, ambassador of Cuba to China, and the two had a friendly talk.

Mayor Han said that China and Cuba are traditionally friendly countries, and in recent years the two countries have seen steady development of their relations and a frequent exchange of high-level visits. In particular, China¡¯s Vice-President Xi Jinping¡¯s visit to Cuba in June last year symbolized the opening up of a new chapter in the amicable exchange and cooperation between the two countries.

Ambassador Alberto Blanco Silva recalled Cuban leaders Fidel Castro¡¯s and Raul Castro¡¯s visits to Shanghai, saying that the high-level visits by the leaders of the two countries have strengthened the mutual understanding and political trust between the two sides. The two countries are complementary to each other in economic and social development and there is a wide range of areas for cooperation between them. He also briefed the mayor on the economic reform resolution passed at the 6th Congress of the Communist Party of Cuba, saying that right now Cuba is carrying out a full economic reform featuring the opening of the unitary state-owned economy to the non-public and private sectors, with a total of over 300,000 self-employed households and agricultural and service sectors under restructuring. He hoped to learn more about the experience of reform of state-owned enterprises in Shanghai and China at large.

Li Mingjun, director-general of the Shanghai Municipal Foreign Affairs Office and Ariel Lorenzo Rodriguez, consul general of Cuba in Shanghai, were present at the meeting.

The Cuban ambassador was consul general in Shanghai from 2002 to 2003. It is his first visit to Shanghai after he became ambassador to China. During his stay in Shanghai, he attended the opening cocktail party for a Cuban art exhibition at Gran Melia Hotel Shanghai, paid a visit to Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences and made a speech entitled ¡°The Updating of Model of Cuba¡¯s Economy¡±, and attended the launching ceremony of a ship built for Cuba by Shanghai Shipyard.
