"A Bosom Japanese Friend of Sun Yat-sen - The Unveiling of Bronze Statue of Umeya Shokichi" Held in Shanghai

On the morning of November 4, ¡°A Bosom Japanese Friend of Sun Yat-sen ¨C The Unveiling of Bronze Statue of Umeya Shokichi¡± was held in Shaoxing Park, an event jointly sponsored by the Shanghai People¡¯s Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries, Huangpu District People¡¯s Government and Shanghai Sun Yat-sen and Soong Qing Ling Relics Administration Committee.

This year marks the 60th anniversary of the Revolution of 1911 and the 15th anniversary of the establishment of friendly exchange relations between Shanghai and Nagasaki Prefecture. In commemoration of the Nagasaki-born Japanese friend Umeya Shokichi¡¯s generous support to Sun Yat-sen and the Chinese democratic revolution and in praise of the historic contributions by the past Chinese and Japanese wise men to the friendly relations between the two nations, Shanghai accepted the statue of Umeya Shokichi presented by Nagasaki Prefecture. The statue is placed in Shaoxing Park in Huangpu District.

Attending the ceremony were Zhou Wei, head of Huangpu District, Wang Xiaoshu, executive vice-president of the Shanghai People¡¯s Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries, Nakamura Houdou, president of Nagasaki Prefectural Japan-China Friendship Association and governor of Nagasaki Prefecture, Izumi Hiroyasu, consul-general of Japan in Shanghai, and Kosaka Ayano, great granddaughter of Umeya Shokichi and executive director of Hibiya Matsumotoro restaurant.
