Mayor Han Zheng met with Peter Chin, his counterpart at Dunedin City, New
Zealand, on April 13 in Shanghai.
On behalf of the municipal government,
Han first delivered a warm welcome to the visiting guests. He said Shanghai and
Dunedin have conducted effective exchanges and communications on a wide range of
fields, such as culture, education, health, water projects and horticulture,
since the two became friendship cities in 1994. Mutual understanding has been
achieved and the friendship has developed, he said.
Han believed Chin's visit would further promote the relationship between
the two cities and lead to more cooperation. Han also described Shanghai's
recent development for the New Zealand guests.
In return, Chin expressed
deep appreciation for Shanghai's achievements and hoped his city and Shanghai
would carry out even more cooperation, particularly in the fields of education
and horticulture.
Formerly a lawyer, Chin has been the mayor of Dunedin
since 2004.
Situated on the southeastern coast of New Zealand's South
Island, Dunedin has a population of around 120,000 and is the main center of
Otago, a region recognized for its spectacular scenery. The sheer physical
beauty of Dunedin, dramatic bush-covered hills and valleys at the head of a long
natural harbor, attracted Maori settlers to the site over four centuries ago.
Then, in 1848, Scottish migrants established a town here, giving it the ancient
name of Edinburgh.
